:- 4.0 out of 5 stars from Amazon Customer -- Lots of funny & interesting things but mistakes creep in : “Midnight Black” has so many different elements to surprise and entertain the reader, not least the narrator’s quirky and occasionally very funny tone of voice. Set in the future, it is none the less firmly rooted in the present in the sense that Eastwood tackles contemporary problems head-on. His central character is also completely recognisable so human beings have undergone no radical changes from the ones we come across today. The sci-fi is, of course, obvious, too, and the penal colony, placed in space, has elements which are futuristic without stretching credibility. The revolution at the close of the novel is probably beyond belief, but the reader can make an act of faith if he wishes. ( Reviewed in the United States on May 30, 2019 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Kindle Customer -- A great thriller : “Having read the original release of this novel and liking it, I was curious where the author had taken this revised and expanded version. As far as suspense thrillers go, Eastwood nailed it. Since the original book was written prior to the beginning of the events of 2020, Eastwood cleverly worked in the polarized political atmosphere, the Black Lives Matter movement, and of course the killer COVID pandemic that swept across the globe. He doesn’t dwell on these events, but makes the critical points of how they effected his future society. I love the way he expanded other areas, dropping clue after teasing clue until the explosive ending. His characters, especially his protagonist, are so well drawn and speaking believable dialogue the way people actually talk, you can see them all clearly in your minds eye. Bravo to Mr. Eastwood for crafting a great story, one that often hits close to home, but that everyone should relate to on some level. The ending is upbeat, but also a cautionary tell of how it could easily go the other way. Great story, great writing.” 5-Stars – An Eastwood fan. Now comes his second novel, Midnight Black- The Purge, which has not only added to my new appreciation for his work, it has made me a true enthusiast! - 5.0 out of 5 stars from Sean Murphy -- Great Reading, Very Hard to Put Down : The first chapter of this novel is in-your-face realistic - a violent no-nonsense setup for what follows. Especially rewarding was the first-person-stream-of-consciousness narration the author chose for his main character, Billy Russell—you really get inside the guy’s head. The author’s eye for detail, sharp dialogue, and constant plot twists move the story along at a fast clip. Although it takes place in the future, it was hard to miss the similarities to today’s economic-driven corporate world, the rise of violence and hate groups across the globe, and a floundering, misguided society. I found Midnight Black to be intelligently written, witty when it needed to be, with a finely crafted cast of characters - some likeable, some not so much - and an ending I never saw coming… and neither will you.” Highly recommended – 5-Stars – Sean M. - 5.0 out of 5 stars from Bernadette Emery -- Great Read! : I have to admit I never used to pick up SciFi books but I heard about this author's previous book "The Autopsy of Planet Earth". I truly enjoyed that book so I decided to read his next one. I was not disappointed! Both had me a bit scared about how we treat our planet and each other. Anything is possible! Midnight Black was also a page turner where I kept wanting to see what would happen next to the main character - Billy Russell. I was even sympathy with this character and what he was going through and what he had to do to survive. If you haven't picked up any of RJ Eastwood (Emery)'s books - Do so today! - 5.0 out of 5 stars from KDW -- Want to keeping reading from the moment you pick it up : I read the first version and was looking to reading the expanded book. I liked the way the author chose to write this terrific thriller in first person stream-of-consciousness: the entire story unfolds through the thoughts of the main character. All of the characters are well developed, and the dialogue written how people really speak. Although this thriller takes place 44 years in the future, with a touch of science fiction along the way, Eastwood cleverly included in the events that took place between 2016 and early 2021, setting the stage for the troubled future society he created. The ending is shocker, but thankfully Eastwood brings his story full-circle, leaving us with hope for the future. I give this novel my full endorsement for its clever story, well-developed relatable characters, an ending I never saw coming, an unexpected romance, and its frightening realism.
